This was created to promote a café known as Divan Japonais. The woman in the black dress is Jane Avril, who is a famous dancer. Japanese and Orientalism styles are clashing in this artwork. The viewer is sitting in the first row above the orchestra pit and looking toward the woman performing on stage. The use of yellow is strong and used articulately.
