Women in art often participated in the "low" arts. Named as such because only women participated in them. They were crafts and not art according to most male artists. However, that idea did not stop them from participating in the "high" arts such as painting and sculpting. Here we have two works by black female artists and two by white female artists.

Rancho Church, New Mexico by Geogria O'Keeffe is a good example her style of painting. She makes a building feel organic. Like this church simply grew up from the ground below it. This painting inspired photographers to go and take picture of the architecture of the southwest of the United States.

Still life with Book by Gabriele Münter shows the way her dedication to tradition developed as well as her style change. This still life includes religious iconogrophy that was traditional to her region of Germany. It also shows the influence of other popular artists like Kandinsky from her original very traditional style.

The Death of Cleopatra by Edmonia Lewis is a depiction of Cleopatra's death. This sculpture is classical in style. It is very reminiscent of sculptures for the Renaissance and ancient Greece.

Negro Head by Nancy Elizabeth Prophet is a sculpture made of wood. She completed this work while she was struggling in Paris. This was one of the few sculptures of hers that was not destroy when she moved back to the United States.
