Ana Mendieta used violence as a theme in a large portion of her work. While this series of photographs is less violent than some of her other work, it still portrays the inherent violence in the male gaze in art. Her body, pressed against glass, is being distorted in a painful manner. It is a representation of how women are perceived and subjected to violent masculinity every day.
